Promises, promises...

Did you know that the Bible contains more than 5,000 promises from God?

He has given us prophetic words in scripture that have proved true time and time again. Those words can bring us encouragement when we're struggling, like "I know the plans I have for you . . . plans to give you hope and a future" Jeremiah 29:11 and "I will never leave you or forsake you." Hebrews 13:5

Because humans with even the best of intentions sometimes break promises, it's easy for us to forget or ignore the promises we find in the Bible; but if you check history, you'll find that every single promise God ever made, He has seen through to completion. Sometimes those promises didn't happen as quickly as people would have liked, but every single one was right on time.

God promised to always be with us, and He promised to love us without end. He promised to carry our burdens and renew our strength, but most of all God promised to send a Son who would be a blessing to all nations. He told his prophets the Son would come as a baby and that the baby would be born in Bethlehem, he even told the date that He would ride into Jerusalem and declare Himself the Messiah. Daniel 9:24-27 The greatest promise God has kept to date is sending Jesus to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. You can read more about the fabulous prophecies of the Messiah in an article by Jim Lippard.
The first candle in an advent wreath is called the Candle of Promise. It's lit to remind us that all of God's promises are true.

This week, when you're tempted to give up or feel discouraged, remember God's promises, His promises to always be with you, to care for you and to love you with a never ending love.

God promised Abraham a son when it seemed impossible, but He did it.

He promised he would father many nations - Not only was he father of the Israelites, but of the Edomites, the Ishmaelites, the Ammonites and the Moabites.

However unlikely it might seem, the promises God has for you will come to fruition; and Jesus will return, just as He said He would.
